Surprise Proposal in the Cotswolds
Some proposals are special and then there are proposals like this one .
George got in touch with me after finding one of my proposal photography blogs online. He and his girlfriend were planning a weekend away in the Cotswolds and he knew he wanted to propose while they were here.
The only challenge?
She couldn't have a clue.
Not even a tiny suspicion.
So together we planned everything.
The exact location, the timing, where I would be standing, how we would communicate beforehand and how we could make the whole thing feel completely natural.
From the moment George first reached out, it was clear how much thought he had put into this. He wanted everything to be perfect and he wanted to make sure this once in a lifetime moment was captured forever.
And Bourton-on-the-Water turned out to be the perfect place to do it.
Why Bourton-on-the-Water is One of the Best Places to Propose in the Cotswolds
If you're thinking about proposing in the Cotswolds, Bourton-on-the-Water should be high on your list. Known as the "Venice of the Cotswolds", it is one of the most picturesque villages in the UK. The beautiful stone bridges, flowing river, honey coloured buildings and charming streets create an incredibly romantic setting.
It feels relaxed.
It feels timeless.
And most importantly, it feels special.
For couples visiting the Cotswolds for a weekend away, it is often one of the first places they explore, which makes it a fantastic location for a surprise proposal.
Planning the Perfect Surprise Proposal
One of the things I love most about proposal photography is helping people plan the moment. Most people have never proposed before. You only get one chance.
That's why I work closely with couples before the day to make sure everything runs smoothly.
For George's proposal we discussed:
- The exact proposal location
- The best time of day
- The route they would walk
- How I would remain hidden
- The best angles for photographs
- What would happen after the proposal
The goal is simple. The proposal should feel natural, effortless and completely focused on the two of you. My job is to make sure you can enjoy the moment without worrying about anything else.
The Cotswolds Proposal
As they walked through Bourton-on-the-Water together, everything looked completely normal.
To her, it was just another beautiful morning exploring the Cotswolds.
To George, this was the moment he had been waiting for.
As they reached the chosen spot, he got down on one knee and asked the question.
The reaction was priceless.
Pure surprise.
Pure happiness.
Exactly the reason I love photographing proposals.
There is nothing staged about these moments. You cannot recreate them. You cannot ask someone to do it again.
What happens is completely real and that's what makes proposal photography so special.
Engagement Photos After the Proposal
Once the excitement settled and they had a few moments together, we spent some time exploring Bourton-on-the-Water and creating some relaxed engagement photos.
This is one of my favourite parts of every proposal shoot.
The nerves are gone.
The secret is out.
And the happiness is completely genuine.
We wandered through the village, stopped by some of the beautiful bridges and captured natural photos that reflected exactly how they felt in that moment.
No awkward posing.
No pressure.
Just two people enjoying one of the best days of their lives.

One of the best parts of this job is the people.
